Fundraising in 2019 in French Tech : The sectors that stood out

Fundraising in 2019 has reached record highs in French Tech. Indeed, €4.5 billions was raised in 2019 compared to €3.2 billions raised in 2018. Some sectors stood out. In this article, Advimotion deciphers them for you.

The MedTech (medical technology) sector

Doctolib, which offers online services for booking medical appointments, has successfully raised a 2019 fundraising round of €130 millions. The startup is among those that have exceeded €100 millions raised. There is also Alizé Pharma, which raised €67 millions. The Medtech sector is the one that has raised the most funds in 2019. Indeed, the sector accounts for 11.3% of funds raised.

The MarTech sector (marketing technologies)

With 9.4% of funds raised, the MarTech sector is the second most raised sector in 2019. The startup Algolia, a search engine for developers, raised €100 million in October 2019. It is also a sector that has performed consistently with at least one fundraising every month.

The Fintech (financial technology) sector

With 6% of funds raised, this sector is booming thanks to new startups launching. Thus, it is a promising sector that continues to develop.

The rising sector : cybersecurity

Two startups, Dashlane and Vade Secure, have successfully raised almost €100 millions each in 2019 (€98.6 millions and €70 millions respectively).

Sectors slowing down : e-commerce and mobility

E-commerce marketplaces account for 1% of fundraising in 2019. A slowdown is observed.

With 4.7% of amounts raised, the mobility sector is losing momentum. Startups are struggling to differentiate themselves from BlaBlaCar or Uber’s offerings.

As we have seen, 2019 was an exceptional year for French startups, which raised 40% more funds than in 2018. Some sectors took advantage of this to stand out while others went backwards. What will happen in 2020 with the health and economic crisis we are currently going through ? Will the amounts raised still be as significant ? Which sectors will stand out the most ?
